Cambodia Gambling Halls
There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and although visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many borders.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, highlights 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel compound that highlights numerous luxuries aside from the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
