Cambodia Gambling Halls
There is an interesting history to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the border from next door Thailand, where casino gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are situated in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that contains numerous amenities accompanying the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
